A New Way or The Ancient Path? Which will we take this New Year?
Another year is before us! An abundance of decisions await our approval! New things to buy and try! But will they always bring about the desired result? Something better is the common idea associated with "new". But is it always better? In Jeremiah 6:16 we read, This is what the LORD says: "Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it and you will find rest for your souls". But you said, 'We will not walk in it' (NIV).
In Jeremiah's day, much like today, there were 'new' teachings, new forms of religions and practices popping up. And they were leading the people of Jerusalem away from worshiping the One and True God. The ancient path is a metaphor which was used to help them understand that they needed to return to the LORD and not pursue the 'new teachings and practices of their day. So it is for us! There are many voices claiming today that there is something better than knowing, loving and worshiping the True God. What is better, stronger or greater than the love that God has for us in Christ Jesus? Nothing! And the Holy Spirit is the One who puts His love in our hearts! Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life! Return to Him, choose Him, stay on the ancient path of loving Him and we will find rest for our souls!
